The yellow-margined box turtle is native to Iriomote, where these images were taken, and also Ishigaki.
Living in wooded areas, the turtles flourish in humid environments and are often found in marshes or close to streams. They grow up to a maximum length of 19cm. The carapace (upper shell) forms a high dome. Omnivorous, it lives on a diverse diet ranging from berries and other plant matter to insects, worms and snails. Designated as a natural national treasure of Japan.
